The rising price of fuel has seen
people who have not previously worried about saving gas. The
conflicts in oil-producing countries do not seem likely to be
resolved soon, so it looks as though gas prices will continue on the
upward climb. Small businesses, as well as families with one or more
cars, will be shouldering the burden of these rises, and seeing the
cost of fuel eating into their profits or monthly budget. Although
there is no avoiding fuel costs entirely, you can develop ways of
cutting your costs that will help you begin saving money on gas
bills.
A good way to begin saving money on
gas is by making sure that your vehicles are maintained properly.
Poor tyres, dirty oil, and engines in need of a tuning can all push
up your prices. Any wear and tear on the car will increase the
amount of fuel that you need. Making sure that your car or vehicles
are maintained regularly mean that you could cut as much as 10% off
your fuel bill; a clear and easy way of saving money on
gas.
Monitor your driving trips. Could you
combine one or two of these? For example if you drive the kids to
school, could you pick up the shopping on the way back, rather than
going out again after you have returned home. Putting your schedule
together like this takes a little bit of planning, but it is worth
it. Consolidating your business trips will also help you to cut fuel
bills; even delivery firms can trim those costs with a little bit of
scheduling, or simply by dividing your week's trips into certain
areas on certain weekdays. Whatever suits your business best, you
can work it out in a couple of hours, and it will certainly help you
with saving money on gas.
Don't let your car 'idle'. There is a
popular myth that allowing your car to stand idle (not moving, but
with the engine running) is the best way of warming up your car, but
this is not the case. People are also reluctant to turn off the
engine if they are only going to be out of the vehicle for a moment.
However, letting your car idle runs up your fuel costs, and 10
seconds of a car standing idle can waste more fuel than simply
turning the engine off and then restating it.
When it is cold, and if you want to
carry on saving money on gas in the winter months, use a block
heater. Block heaters make it easier to get your car started on cold
days; and when it is less than 20 degrees, block heaters can keep
the car at the right temperature, and can improve fuel savings by as
much as 10 percent. Even if it is just cold outside, using a block
heater can still ensure that you are saving money on gas no matter
how cold it is outside.
